The Z mount enters the world of professional cinema

Although Nikon had already introduced advanced video features in its latest mirrorless cameras, such as the Z8 and Z9, the collaboration with RED Digital Cinema aimed to combine Nikon’s expertise in optics, processors, and algorithms with RED’s cinematic know-how, particularly in image processing, RAW compression, and the professional video experience.

In an interview last October at the Salon de la Photo, Nikon announced that collaborations with RED were in the works and that it would take time. Ultimately, the wait was shorter than expected.

New Z Cinema series from Nikon

The V-Raptor X and Komodo-X with Z mount introduce a new lineup of video cameras, the Z Cinema series.

“This launch marks the beginning of collaborative products from RED and Nikon and represents the first step in a new Z Cinema series,” said Keiji Oishi, newly appointed CEO of RED Digital Cinema. “By integrating the Z mount, RED offers more lens choices than ever before, giving filmmakers greater artistic flexibility. This development provides filmmakers with the versatility of Nikon’s innovative Z range and PL options, as well as access to F-mount glass and many popular vintage lenses.”

A faster autofocus thanks to Nikon algorithms

The acquisition of RED by Nikon already brings significant autofocus improvements. While these RED cameras already used phase-detection AF, they now benefit from Nikon’s advanced expertise in this field.

The V-Raptor X and Komodo-X with Z mount thus offer more precise autofocus with less focus breathing. While the RF mount versions share the same hardware, the Z mount models feature optimized algorithms that significantly enhance autofocus performance. The RF mount versions will also benefit from autofocus improvements, albeit to a lesser extent.

The firmware 2.0 further enriches autofocus capabilities, allowing filmmakers to adjust AF speed instead of merely turning it on or off.

Notably, linear MF focus will be available for Z mount lenses that support this function.

Precise aperture control with Z mount lenses

The hardware integration between the camera and lens via the Z mount enables, according to RED, smooth aperture control. This control is managed either through the rings on Nikkor Z lenses or via the RED smartphone app. Real-time iris adjustments are thus more precise, with incremental control surpassing the typical third-stop limitation. This feature remains exclusive to RED cameras with Z mount.

Using the NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ on the Komodo-X also allows remote control of all camera and lens functions via the RED Camera app.

If you are not familiar with RED video cameras, here is a recap of the video capabilities of both the V-Raptor (X) and Komodo-X (while hoping Nikon will harmonize RED’s product naming conventions…).

V-Raptor (X) Z Mount: the 8K flagship of RED

The V-Raptor (X) is RED’s flagship cinema camera, designed for professionals demanding top-tier quality. Initially launched with a Canon RF mount, it is now available with a lockable Nikon Z mount.

V-Raptor (X) Z

It features a full-frame VistaVision CMOS Global Shutter 8K VV sensor with 35.4 MP (8192 × 4320 pixels). Its dynamic range of 17+ stops ensures detail retention in both shadows and highlights.

The V-Raptor (X) supports 8K at 120 fps in 17:9 and 8K at 150 fps in 2.4:1, ideal for high-speed sequences in modern productions. Its global shutter eliminates any rolling shutter effect, even at high speeds—a feature more common in cinema than photography.

This camera supports REDCODE RAW and Apple ProRes, with the ability to record both formats simultaneously. This flexibility streamlines workflows while preserving maximum quality for post-production.

Like the Komodo-X 6K, it can record in Apple ProRes 4444 XQ, ProRes 4444, ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 422, and ProRes 422 LT.

Designed to be compact and maneuverable, the V-Raptor (X) is easy to use in diverse shooting environments. Its intuitive user interface and ergonomic design allow operators to adjust camera settings effortlessly during filming.

The V-Raptor (X) incorporates the RED Global Vision system for optimized highlight and shadow management, providing greater latitude in post-production.

It also supports the Phantom Track function, essential for virtual production and applications requiring precise motion tracking.

Komodo-X 6K Z Mount: the versatile S35 camera

The Komodo-X 6K stands apart from the V-Raptor (X) in several key aspects. It features a Super 35mm Global Shutter CMOS sensor with 19.9 MP, offering a maximum video resolution of 6K in a more compact body—a format particularly suited for various types of shoots.

This new version adopts the Z mount while maintaining the option for the Canon RF mount available since its initial release.

The Komodo-X records in 6K at 80 fps and 4K at 120 fps. While these resolutions are lower than those of the V-Raptor (X), they are more than sufficient for smooth sequences and slow-motion shots.

Its more compact and lightweight design compared to the V-Raptor (X) makes it particularly well-suited for shoots requiring high mobility.

Regarding recording formats, the Komodo-X also supports REDCODE RAW but, unlike the V-Raptor (X), does not allow simultaneous recording in Apple ProRes. Switching formats requires a restart, which may be inconvenient for some users.

In summary, while the V-Raptor (X) stands out for its 8K resolution and extended dynamic range, the Komodo-X shines with its versatility, compactness, and strong 6K and 4K performance.

Z-PL Adapters, with or without Electronic ND Filter

RED offers two Z-PL adapters per camera for its new V-Raptor (X) and Komodo-X with Z mount, providing extended compatibility with PL lenses.

These adapters integrate Cooke /i technology for recording optical metadata and triggering recording, ensuring seamless integration into the cinematic workflow.

Two versions are available: a standard version and a version equipped with an electronically adjustable ND filter from 2 to 7 stops. The ND filter setting can be adjusted in 1/4, 1/3, or 1-stop increments via the adapter buttons or through RED protocols on monitors and applications. A clear filter is provided with each ND adapter for use without the filter.

With their titanium structure, these adapters resist temperature variations, ensuring precision and reliability even in extreme conditions.

Price and Availability of RED V-Raptor (X) and RED Komodo-X

The RED V-Raptor (X) with Nikon Z mount is available for pre-order at a price of $29,995, while the Komodo-X with Nikon Z mount is offered at €6,995, body only.

RED also offers a trade-in program allowing users to exchange RED DSMC, Raven, Scarlet-W, DSMC2, or Ranger cameras for credit towards the purchase of a new RED V-Raptor XL X Pack or RED V-Raptor Pack X Pack, available with either the new Z mount or the RF mount.

Z-PL adapters are available at $1,500 for the standard version, while versions with an electronic ND filter cost $3,500.

The V-Raptor X and Komodo-X with Z mount are available from RED Digital Cinema, Inc. and authorized RED resellers, such as B&H.

Our Initial Impression

This announcement marks a significant milestone for the professional cinema industry with the integration of Nikon’s Z mount on RED cameras. The synergy between Nikon’s technical and optical expertise and RED’s cinematic know-how seems promising, particularly with improvements in autofocus algorithms.

However, for now, this is simply an adaptation of existing cameras rather than new products developed jointly. The true test will be how this collaboration evolves with the development of future cameras designed from the outset to fully leverage the technologies of both brands.

If the price surprises you, remember that this type of camera is often offered through professional video rental companies.
