Canon is making waves at CP+ 2026 with the Analog Concept Camera, a prototype with a design reminiscent of medium-format film cameras. Featuring manual optics and waist-level viewing, this intriguing camera combines retro design with a digital sensor. No information has been released yet regarding its potential release date.

Sommaire
Two visions for the same concept
CP+ 2026 has just opened its doors in Yokohama. Alongside the Canon EOS R6 Mark III and its RF mount lenses, the red and black brand is presenting two prototypes of a future (and hypothetical) camera, called the “Canon Analog Concept Camera.“
While they share a common foundation with a focus on the top, the two concepts differ in their design and philosophy:
- Concept A: a traditional “Retro camera” design
- Concept B: a minimalist and modern “simple box design,” embellished with a brass wheel and a sleek trigger.

This nod to the past comes at just the right moment, as rumors intensify around another retro camera body expected in April, designed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary Canon AE-1.

Vintage look, digital heart
At first glance, these two concepts evoke the heyday of medium format, particularly 6×7 cameras. However, the technology used is 100% digital.

The user experience is unique: the user does not look into a mirror, but at a screen via the top viewfinder. When the shutter is released, a movable mirror lifts up to allow light to reach the sensor. Focusing is exclusively manual, using the lens ring.

The process is deliberately slow: aim, focus, shoot.
A deliberately imperfect rendering?
Far from the race for megapixels, this project focuses on the “character” of the image. The first visuals presented at the stand suggest a rendering similar to that of a disposable camera or pinhole camera, with a very pronounced grain.

No technical information has been released at this time. However, the size of the body and the aesthetics of the images suggest that a modestly sized sensor will be used, probably 1-inch or even smaller.

What does the future hold for the Analog Concept Camera?
For now, the Analog Concept Camera is just a stylistic exercise. No information has been provided regarding the possible production of either version. Canon is undoubtedly taking advantage of CP+ 2026 to gauge public opinion via an online survey offered to visitors.
However, it is refreshing to see the brand stepping off the beaten track. A few years after the Ivy REC and PowerShot Zoom, Canon is now exploring “neo-retro” territory, delivering a product that is both nostalgic and decidedly intriguing.
