Zeiss teases a new Otus lens for mirrorless cameras

Zeiss, the renowned German optics manufacturer, has announced its return to the camera lens market after a six-year hiatus. The company teased this comeback on its Instagram account, hinting at the release of a new Otus lens.

Zeiss comeback

Zeiss is back! While it was thought that the Oberkochen optics company was focusing (in terms of photography) on smartphone lenses, the German firm has been teasing for a few days its return to the mirrorless camera lens market.

Based on the different campaigns and visuals presented, it appears that Zeiss will unveil a new lens on February 25, just ahead of CP+ 2025. In all likelihood, it will be a prime lens from the Otus lineup, with a maximum aperture of f/1.4. The visual presented on Instagram was taken with an “older” Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 lens.

The short video highlighted by Zeiss also suggests that it is a full-frame mirrorless lens (a Sony camera body is recognizable), and various rumors point to a 50mm f/1.4.

Interestingly, even though Zeiss had developed a (very) small lineup of lenses for Sony mirrorless cameras—the well-known Batis lenses—the last lens introduced in 2019 was the Zeiss Otus 100mm f/1.4 Apo Sonnar ZF.2 for DSLRs. Furthermore, at the time, Otus lenses lacked autofocus. We hope this new model will have autofocus.
