After launching its iPhone app, Leica is now unveiling a … magnetic Leica LUX grip for iPhone. The goal? Optimize the handling of the smartphone for photography. This product appears to be the result of Leica’s acquisition in December 2023 of the Norwegian startup Fjorden Electra AS, which had already developed the Leica LUX app that simulates various “Leica Looks” and the iconic focal lengths of the M mount.

Sommaire
An ergonomic design inspired by Leica cameras
The Leica LUX grip attaches magnetically to the iPhone via MagSafe technology (iPhone 12 and later) and communicates using Bluetooth Low Energy. It is designed to provide a photographic experience similar to that of traditional cameras, even with an iPhone. Weighing just 130 grams, this grip is ambidextrous and features several physical controls tailored for photography.

The physical controls include:
- A two-stage mechanical shutter button (half-press for focus, full-press to capture),
- A customizable dial allowing adjustments for zoom, aperture, shutter speed, or exposure compensation via the Leica LUX app,
- Two customizable buttons for quick access to favorite functions within the Leica LUX app.
This grip also includes a tripod mount and can double as a stand when placed vertically.

Staying true to Leica’s DNA, this grip features a minimalist anodized aluminum design. However, there is no signature red dot logo.
It includes a 300 mAh rechargeable USB-C battery, which, according to Leica, can last for 1,000 shots. Charging takes about two hours. However, it’s a missed opportunity that Leica did not integrate an external battery feature to also charge the iPhone while shooting.

The Leica LUX app: the perfect companion
The grip is optimized to work with the Leica LUX app, developed in collaboration with Fjorden. This app offers advanced features such as:
- Full manual controls (ISO, shutter speed, exposure),
- Simulation of iconic Leica lenses (e.g., Summilux-M 28mm f/1.4 ASPH) and signature bokeh effects,
- 11 “Leica Looks” presets that reproduce the signature renderings of Leica cameras, ranging from classic black & white to “Vivid” mode.
The app is available for free with limited features, while the premium subscription (€7.99 per month or €79.99 per year) unlocks all options.

A product born from the strategic acquisition of Fjorden
Leica acquired Fjorden Electra AS to strengthen its position in the mobile photography segment. Fjorden had already proven its expertise with its innovative grip for iPhone, which won an iF Design Award in 2022.
This acquisition has allowed Leica to integrate Fjorden’s expertise in mobile accessories and app development while incorporating its own mastery of image processing and design.

Price and availability
The Leica LUX grip is available for €310, with a separate leather case priced at €65. Each purchase includes a one-year subscription to the Leica LUX app.
It will be available in Leica Stores, on the Leica online shop, and in specialized retailers.
Our first impression
Let’s be clear: Leica has just released one of the most expensive smartphone grips on the market, but that’s hardly surprising from the German manufacturer. However, what we get is an elegant grip with a minimalist aluminum design that will delight Leica enthusiasts.
This grip and its physical photography controls should integrate seamlessly with the Leica app, enhancing the iPhone shooting experience.
