At IBC 2024, OWC unveiled its new high-end portable SSD, the Envoy Ultra. This model, compatible with the Thunderbolt 5 standard, promises exceptional performance with a speed of 6000 MB/s, making it ideal for demanding professionals and creatives. However, it will take a few more months before it can be fully utilized, as Thunderbolt 5 adoption is still in progress.

A Thunderbolt 5 SSD: Ultra-Fast Transfer Speeds
The Envoy Ultra SSD with Thunderbolt 5 marks a significant breakthrough in performance. According to OWC, it reaches transfer speeds exceeding 6000 MB/s, up to twice as fast as the fastest Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 drives. These speeds allow for seamless handling of large files, making this SSD ideal for creatives working with high-resolution videos, 3D rendering, or extensive photo libraries.

While these figures are impressive, the adoption of Thunderbolt 5 technology is still limited, with its ecosystem still developing. Currently, the Razer Blade 18 Mercury Edition is the only compatible laptop on the market, but the standard is expected to expand in the coming months.
Extended Compatibility and Versatility
The main advantage of the Envoy Ultra lies in its compatibility. OWC has ensured that its SSD works with a wide range of devices. While it fully leverages Thunderbolt 5’s blazing speeds, it remains backward compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and 4 ports as well as USB4 devices, providing valuable versatility for users with different setups. However, the manufacturer has not disclosed the maximum speeds on these interfaces.

Robust and Durable Design
Beyond performance, OWC has focused on durability. The Envoy Ultra Thunderbolt 5 SSD is designed to withstand tough conditions. Water-resistant, dustproof, and shockproof (without an IP rating), it stands as a reliable tool for professionals on the go. However, OWC warns that the Thunderbolt port is not waterproof and must be cleaned and dried before being plugged into a device. It’s also unfortunate that the USB-C cable is not detachable
Its aluminum casing ensures efficient heat dissipation, preventing overheating even during intensive tasks. Additionally, it operates without a fan, guaranteeing a silent experience. The SSD comes with a 3-year warranty.

Our First Impressions
Despite its impressive features, the OWC Envoy Ultra Thunderbolt 5 may not reach its full potential immediately. The Thunderbolt 5 standard has yet to see widespread adoption. The first compatible computers are expected to arrive by late 2024, with anticipation around new models from manufacturers like Apple.
