What if the Nikon Z 9 thought it was a cat? In a recent online demonstration at CP+ 2022, the manufacturer unveiled a beta firmware update that replaced the shutter sound with several noises, including a cat’s meow.

No, this isn’t April Fools’ Day. During the Japanese CP+ photography event, which ended up being held entirely online due to the Omicron variant, camera manufacturers presented their latest products. At Nikon, in addition to the presentation of the brand new NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S and the Z 9, we were treated to a rather special demonstration…
The Nikon Z 9, the first hybrid camera designed for professional photographers, doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously. In fact, new beta firmware is set to offer a few new features, though not necessarily where you might expect. With no mechanical shutter, the camera can simulate the sound of the shutter release, and a new feline option is set to make an appearance. This means that a cat’s meow could be used to trigger the shutter, as can be seen in this video (at 1:35:30):
Other sounds could be attributed to the shutter sound, such as a recorded voice—why not? The presenters also showed that the camera could mimic the shutter sound of a Nikon D750 or Nikon F4. It is unclear whether this is simply an audio recording or a sound effect built into the camera.
These new shutter sounds could be integrated into the Nikon Z 9 via a firmware update if the public responds positively to this announcement.
So, we turn to you: are you for or against the Nikon Z 9’s meow? Let us know in the comments.
