Update 20/11/2025: the Sigma 200 mm f/2 DG OS Sports is not compatible with 1.4x or 2x teleconverters, in either L-mount or E-mount.
Sigma unveils a new Sports prime lens. With the Sigma 200 mm f/2 DG OS Sports, the Japanese manufacturer aims to combine long focal length, ultra-fast aperture and image quality. It is available in Sony E and L Mount, and will ship from September 4, 2025.

Sommaire
Sigma 200 mm f/2 DG OS Sports: an unusual super-fast telephoto
Sigma continues to expand its lens lineup. Alongside the Sigma 12 mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary for APS-C mirrorless cameras, the Aizu-based lens maker launches a new fast telephoto. The Sigma 200 mm f/2 DG OS Sports joins the Sigma 500 mm f/5.6 DG DN OS Sports in the lineup. The latter was one of our favourites at the 2024 edition of the Montier-en-Der wildlife photography festival.

Its (almost) unusual 200 mm focal length and ultra-fast f/2 aperture make it a formidable ally for indoor sports photographers. Beyond that, it should appeal to portrait (and wildlife photography) enthusiasts looking to play with background compression and bokeh.

However, the lens is not compatible with 1.4x and 2x teleconverters – in either L-mount or E-mount. So there is no way to get an equivalent 280 mm f/2.8 or 400 mm f/4.
Finally, this lens has no DSLR equivalent – except for the Canon EF 200 mm f/2 L USM (and its “cousins” with f/1.8 and f/2.8 apertures) launched in 2008.
Here are the key specifications of the Sigma 200 mm f/2 DG OS Sports:

A (very) complex optical formula
To increase sharpness and reduce aberrations, the Sigma 200 mm f/2 DG OS Sports relies on 19 elements in 14 groups – including 2 FLD and 2 SLD (low-dispersion) elements. The lens maker says it paid particular attention to reducing flare, ghosting and loss of contrast in backlit conditions, thanks to Nano Porus and Super Multi-Layer coatings. Likewise, axial chromatic aberration should be greatly reduced.

The f/2 aperture is delivered by a circular 11-blade diaphragm, ensuring smooth transitions between the subject and the background and a very pleasing bokeh. Interestingly, the lens does without aspherical elements – likely to preserve the smoothness of the background blur.

The minimum focusing distance is 170 cm, with a maximum magnification ratio of 0.13x. On the autofocus side, we find the HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) motor, featured in most of Sigma’s recent telephoto lenses. Similarly, the OS2 stabilisation system is on board, offering a maximum gain of 6.5 stops. Two stabilisation modes are available (mode 1: general-purpose, mode 2: intelligent stabilisation for panning).

Extensive manual controls
In terms of dimensions, the Sigma 200 mm f/2 DG OS Sports measures 20 cm in length, with a maximum diameter of 11.9 cm and a weight of 1.8 kg. The front element accepts a 105 mm circular filter.

Sigma says it has equipped the lens with “insulating paint that prevents heat absorption.” A welcome feature for those planning to use it on a safari, for example. Beyond that, the lens is designed to be resistant to water splashes and dust. The front element features a water- and oil-repellent coating for easier cleaning.
Beyond that, the Sigma 200 mm f/2 DG OS Sports stands out with its extensive manual controls, designed to make professionals’ work easier:
- focus ring
- aperture ring (de-clickable)
- click on/off switch
- AF/MF switch
- focus limiter (3 m – ∞ / 1.7–3 m / Full)
- stabilisation mode selector
- custom 1/2/3 switch
- 3 customisable buttons
- lock switch

Sigma says it has redesigned the tripod collar. The foot has been lengthened, and the gap between the foot and the lens barrel has been increased for a better grip, especially during transport. Additionally, the tripod collar still features a “click” detent every 90° – and its foot is Arca Swiss-compatible. Two features we would love to see on competing lenses!

Finally, the lens is compatible with the USB Dock UD-11 (L-mount only). It is also eligible for mount conversion through Sigma’s service centre.
